 3.2.3.13.7.2.1. Pulmonary vs systemic circulation

Pulmonary vs systemic circulation

Briefly outline the differences between the pulmonary and systemic circulation (1995)

Will come back to do this question after learning about systemic circulation.

Pulmonary has low blood pressure 25/8 (mean 15) vs systemic BP of 120/80 (mean 90)

Pulmonary circulation is more pulsatile relatively.

Pulmonary circulation has lower resistance - about 1/8 to 1/10 of systemic vascular resistance, and this resistance changes with lung volume, cardiac output, and alveolar PAO2.

Pulmonary circulation is where O2 is taken up by blood and CO2 is eliminated from blood (opposite to systemic circulation.)

Pulmonary arterial blood has higher PCO2 and lower PO2.
