Differential diagnosis of acute stroke

  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Post-ictal paralysis (Todd paralysis)
  • Bell palsy
  • Hypertensive encephalopathy
  • Epidural/subdural haematoma
  • Brain tumour/abscess
  • Complicated migraine
  • Meningitis/encephalitis
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Hyperosmotic coma
  • Wernicke's encephalopathy
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Meniere's disease
  • Demyelinating disease (multiple sclerosis)
  • Drug toxicity (lithium, phenytoin, carbamazepine)

 

Sickle cell disease

Stroke occurs by age 20 in over 10% patients with sick cell anemia and is the most common cause of ischaemic stroke in children.
