Clinical significance

Relatively avirulent.

Streptococcus mutans and other viridans causes:

  • Dental caries
  • Subacute bacterial endocarditis with abnormal/damaged valves

Laboratory identification

alpha or gamma hemolytic

Treatment

Penicillin

Prevention/immunity

Penicillin prophylaxis before dental procedures in at risk patients.
