Characteristics/Epidemiology

Normal flora for respiratory tract and genital tract

Clinical significance

Moraxella catarrhalis can cause infections in:

  • respiratory system
  • middle ear
  • eye
  • CNS
  • joints

Laboratory identification

  • Aerobic
  • Oxidase-positive
  • Fastidious
  • Does not ferment carbohydrate (differ from neisseria)

Cultured on blood or chocolate agar
