Diphtheroids

Many other corynebacterium species resemble C. diphtheriae morphologically, but do not produce toxin.

Characteristics/Epidemiology

Commensals in nose, throat, nasopharynx, skin, urinary tract, conjunctiva.

Clinical significance

Corynebacterium ulcerans - sensitive to beta phages and can produce small amount of toxin if lysogenised.

Treatment

Most are multiple drug resistent.

First line: vancomycin
