Magnesium distribution

Extracellular vs intracellular

Extracellular [Mg2+]
= 1.5 mmol/L

Intracellular [Mg2+]
= 30 mmol/L

NB:

According to [KB2:p17]

  • Serum [Mg2+]
    = 0.7 to 1 mmol/kg
    = 1.4 to 2 mEq/L

Body potassium distribution

[KB2:p15]

Total body Mg2+ = 1 mol

  • Intracellular fluid = 99%
  • Extracellular fluid = 1%  (10mmol)
